Little Viking Figurine: Baldur, 8.4cm Tall
Balder
Balder (or Baldr or Baldur) is, in Norse mythology, a fair, wise, eloquent and helpful god. He is the son of the gods Odin and Frigg, married to Nanna, who together has a son Forsete, god and mediator in disagreements. After many nightmares predicting his death, his caring mother Frigg goes out into the world to counteract his fate. She talks to everything in the world, living and dead, and makes everyone promise that no harm will come to her son. All things, except the mistletoe, promise it, because Frigg thinks the mistletoe is so small and innocent. When the Aesir (gods) play by throwing everything they can at Balder (because he is not hurt by anything anymore), Loki tricks his and Balder's blind brother Hod into joining in the game and he shoots Balder with an arrow bound with mistletoe by Loki. Balder dies and is later put on his boat, along with his wife Nanna who dies of heartbreak and they are burned together.
